Our UMYF has opened up and youth and sponsors from another church in town have joined to form a Community Youth Group. Meetings are held in our Christ Memorial United Methodist Church ith two couples from our church and one couple from St. Mark's Lutheran Church as sponsors. All six sponsors and 29 youth Iincluding a few from St. Andrew's Catholic church went as a group to Eagle Pass, TX. While there, they helped ready a house for two grandparents who are raising 4 of their grandchildren. They cleaned, painted, replaced a water heater, built bunk beds for the kids. That family had no home to live in before the group got started. They also helped with VBS in the afternoons. While helping with VBS, they went shopping for new shoes for the children attending VBS. They were so grateful - one boy didn't have shoes before that and one little girl wouldn't put hers on because she didn't want then to get dirty. They also helped deliver food to those in need. They got so attached to the people they worked with - many tears were shed when they left. It really opened their eyes to see some of the conditions that these prople lived in.
Before leaving Eagle Pass, they went to the Rio Grande and had communion at the river.
On their way home, they visited The Alamo and the River Walk.
Continuing on - they visited the Memorial in Oklahome City.
They all made many friends and memories they will never forget. It didn't take them long to realize how lucky they are to live where they do. We all take the comfort of a rood over our heads, running water, heating and especially cooling!!, plenty of food, clothing, schools and much more for granted.
I'm sure even those wary to go on such a long trip are very glad they did!
