Whiz Kids

For over a decade Chapel Hill UMC has provided tutors and support to the Whiz Kids literacy program. This week we celebrate "graduation" and the end of school with the kids. Tutors and leaders provide a snack, a short Bible lesson, and read with the children. Chapel Hill hosts a site for Greystone Elementary and tutors 28 children with 31 volunteers and tutors providing support. A Chapel Hill member leads the program through Kaiser Elementary at another church with 34 students with  volunteers and tutors providing support. Due to the recent teacher strikes in Oklahoma and a subsequent extension of school hours to make up for the two week school closures tutors, volunteers and students have all put in extra effort to keep learning going in the last month of school meeting late. This program improves reading and the relationships that develop with the tutors provide support for students too.
