Care Center Sewing Ministry

One of the special ministry members contacted area care facilities to see if they could use any walker bags, and got a request for 20. She then suggested several of us each contact other area care centers in the nearby town, which we did, and ended up with requests for around 200 bags total between all of them. We asked for donations of fabric, which allowed many to empty out their "stashes", and began planning. We then discussed how we could further use this ministry, and arranged with the local care center for a day to gather with residents who were interested, to cut/sew bags. We were not sure how this would be received, but have a regular group of ladies that attend our monthly gathering to turn and press these walker bags. (We sew them ahead of time.) In addition to the bags, a member contacted a local church to see how we could assist them with their annual mission trip to Ghana. They go and do mostly umbilical surgeries, and additional medical care.  They suggested making belly pillows for patients to use  after these surgeries. We have added those pillows into this gathering as well. A resident in the independent living section, took on the task of stuffing and sewing the pillows shut. She then went through her own quilting stash and started making the pillows on her own, and we provided the stuffing. She is 94 years old, and thinks it's a wonderful thing to be a part of, when she knew what the pillows were for. This sewing ministry has allowed us to build relationships with some of the residents. We feel it has been a blessing to all who are a part of it.
