Certainly these have been trying times, but so often challenges often bring out the best in us. And that is just what has happened here at Asbury. Communication has been working in our church. First, the Pastor has posted magnificient messages on Asbury's FaceBook page, delivering those messages--much needed words--from Asbury's sanctuary. The solemnity and holiness permeates the post and more and more people are " tuning in" to hear the words that help assuage not only the fright and anxiety of the times, but also the loneliness that so many of us suddenly face.
Second, small things truly do matter. The secretary continues to send out letters, thank you notes, and short messages to members of the congregation. She also makes phone calls to touch base with so many of us who are following the stay calm, stay safe, and stay home advice from the Governor and Dr. Levine.
Third, members of the congregation are making it a point to keep in touch with each other. A short phone call goes a long way. A "just wondering how you are doing" moment lifts spirits that miss the Sunday worship and the get togethers. People are keeping in touch, making it a point to check in on each other, to offer words of encouragement to each other. Asbury has taken the church out of the building, continuing to be a family of Christ. Seeing an online message is grand, but hearing a voice--the emotion, the empathy, the concern, brings to life the idea that we should love one another. Hearing a laugh, an inflection of joy, a lifted spirit still has a quality yet to be captured completely by today's technological thumbs up for like or some other quickly clicked comment!
