9/11/2014 - Our community lost an important person, Paula Manning this week. Paula died of cancer, she was 48 years old. She was a valued employee at the
Texas Dept of Corrections - Gatesville, TX Prison, working there for 17 years - several of those years she worked on horseback. Paula was an accomplished
barrel racer and all-around horse woman! Our church hosted her funeral service and had over 250 people present. The prison officers presented an Honor Guard,
Officers and Majors sat together in the Choir loft. At the graveside service the Prison Warden presented a poem about the Riderless Horse (accompanyed by a real
horse) with boots facing backwards. The Warden closed the service with "the last radio call." This is custom when officer lose one of their group. The Warden uses
the fallen officer's radio number and says "(number) signing off, over and out." The church and community fed those that were present after the graveside service.
What a beautiful example of team effort from the community and church.
