Our local Labyrinth practice group has been praying with the Warrenton Methodist congregation since November, 2011 for the opportunity to share the labyrinth practice with the incarcerated youth ( age 15-21) at the Youth Authority.  In May, 2012 we received our official "go ahead"! This was a great step out in faith for the administration and staff at the Youth Authority and we are grateful for their confidence and support.  Pastor Jane Hill prepared a unit of multi-cultural study for the high school classes centered on the labyrinth and provided it to the Principal.  15 young gentlemen completed the elective class and, on Wenesday, June 13, three groups of five students participated in an actual walk. Our prayers had been answered. In honor of the sacred canvas labyrinth, the gym floor had been scrubbed so cleanly, the participants had fresh socks and were quick to tell us " we even took an extra shower after lunch to be special clean".  Each group had a reflection and discussion time after the walk and were very pleased by the experience and the chance to talk about it.  As we departed the institution, several staff asked that we include a time for them to "walk the walk" the next time we come.  We are invited back for an Advent experience.  This event was a special one, unique in the OYA system, we believe, breaking new ground of freedom of activity for the young men. We are encouraged and affirmed for the simple ministry that our monthly individualized cards of encouragement and birthday cupcakes are providing! We also provide a student selected book of choice for each graduate at their commencement ceremony.  The cupcakes and book purchases are supported by money gifts folks from Vancouver and Orting Washington.  These gifting people are delighted to be connected with this ministry. Our congregation is so amazed that their simple, random acts of kindness and inclusion are making such a difference for these 50 young men and the 60 staff that work at the OYA center in our little community.
